TONY ROBINSON

05-01-2012

A shoot for the Daily Telegraph of actor, presenter and author Tony Robinson.

Tony has just published a series of childrens books that on the subject of Roamn and Egyptian history.

As would be expected, he was very professional to work with and with me being a fan of Blackadder and Tony's history presenting shows, it was a thrill to meet him.

Here is ane excerpt from the interview ,you can read the rest here and some of the shots from the today are below.

“Politicians,” he says, “have been downplaying the importance of history as a subject in our schools but, if they had bothered to have a better grasp of history themselves, they might have avoided costly wars. Instead they act like children. The only time that they think matters is their own.”

Since the actor, author and presenter of popular TV shows such as the long-running archaeological investigation, Time Team, spent four years on Labour’s National Executive Committee in the early 2000s when Britain was at war in Iraq, his remarks would appear to be directed towards Tony Blair.

“I’m not naming names,” he replies with that twinkly, wide-eyed smile that has been his trademark since his made his name playing the simple dogsbody, Baldrick, in Blackadder in the 1980s, “but it is salutary to consider historical prime ministers such as Gladstone, Disraeli, Palmerston, Lloyd-George and Churchill. They all had a real, visceral sense of history and so saw their actions as part of something that wasn’t only in the past. It is a dangerous fallacy for politicians to convince themselves to believe that what they do doesn’t have a historical context.”

MIRACLE IVF BABY BORN USING NEW HIGH TECH MACHINE

04-20-2012

A fun shoot with the staff of Care in Manchester to document the first baby born from a revolutionary new machine.

Little Isabella was amazingly well behaved at only a few weeks old, and it was interestimng to see the little girl pictured with her embryo that was only a few days old at the time.

A lovely story and you can see the news report at Granada on ITV today.

FIRST UK BABIES BORN FROM IVF “EMBRYOSCOPE” AT CARE IN MANCHESTER

The first babies have now been born following time-lapse monitoring and culture of embryos in a high-tech incubator with a built in microscope and camera system.  The EmbryoScope, introduced at CARE in Manchester, was the first to be used in the UK in a clinical setting. The first patients to benefit from the controlled, continuous monitoring have now given birth.  CARE has seen a 44% increase in pregnancy rates, (34.7-50.1%) compared with matched controls using standard incubation.

Alison Campbell, Head of Embryology at CARE said, “Currently, assessment of embryos in IVF is limited to brief snap-shot glimpses at defined time points, usually one per day, involving removal from the incubator.  However, embryo development is a dynamic process and the use of time lapse imaging with the EmbryoScope enables the growth and activity of each stage to be observed continuously by the embryologist without removing them from incubation”.

“The ability to view continuous embryo growth helps us to observe abnormal development, and exclude embryos that are not ideal for implantation."

“Eggs are injected with sperm and then placed into the EmbryoScope for fertilisation and development to take place.  Images are taken every few minutes and viewed as time lapse video by the embryologists until the point of embryo transfer, usually 3 or 5 days later. The ability to study these images in a closed system allows us to more accurately select the most viable embryo for transfer into the patient.  Early assessment of this technology demonstrates that the new, valuable information is delivering improved pregnancy rates.”

Isabella Potter from Wigan is just three weeks old and mum Gemma said “She is our little miracle.  We are so happy, we have been shouting from the rooftops for three weeks”.  Their IVF cycle was funded by Ashton, Wigan & Leigh PCT. The embryos were monitored and assessed inside the Embryoscope which combines the optimum conditions of an incubator with built in camera to capture every stage of cell division.

ANDY GRAY

03-07-2012
A shoot with Andy Gray at his Warwarkshire home, and after a cup of tea and a chat, we cracked on with the half hour shoot around the grounds of his fabulous home, with over 30 acres ,swimming pool, tennis courts and even a golf green which the keen nine handicapper uses for practise, it is very impressive.

Andy was doing an article about life asfter Sky, you may recall he was sacked back in 2011 for 'sexist' comments, which he feels were taken out of context and resulted in his unfortunate dismissal. He is very candid in the interview and he goes as far to state he had thought about killing himself after all the fallout from the Sky saga.

Despite the sad aspect of the interview, it was a fun shoot ,if a little rushed, we shot seven locations in just under half an hour !

I was very pleased that one of my favourite shots from the shoot, which I sent over in black and white ( not usual to do this these days, as desks generally prefer everything in color ) was chosen for a double page spread, and I think worked well in the context of the interview.
